Hopefully, you have been able to make the most of the glorious summer with beer sales up and more customers using your beer gardens and outside areas. As we are now getting into the swing of autumn and the nights are drawing in, that does not mean that the opportunities to maximise sales and getting more customers into your premises has now come to an end for the year.
Below are a couple of pointers and reminders of notable dates coming up, which you may want to check that you are covered for under your premises licence.
1. British summer time
British summer time comes to an end at 02:00 on Sunday 28 October 2018, at which point the time will become 01:00 and premises permitted to trade until 02:00 or later can enjoy an extra hour of trading (unless there is something specific on your premises licence to prevent this).
It is worth remembering though that British summer time will next begin on 31 March 2019 and unless you have a specific permitted timing on your premises licence to cover the clocks going forward then you will lose an hour of trade when at 01:00 the time becomes 02:00. Therefore, you may want to consider a temporary event notice to ensure that you are covered.
2. Temporary event notices
At the end of October we have Halloween, at the beginning of November it will be Bonfire Night and Christmas is now less than three months away. It is therefore worth checking your premises licence to see whether or not you are permitted to trade extra hours on these named special days should you wish.
If you are permitted to trade later on these days by way of a ‘non-standard timing’ you should then check the conditions on your premises licence to see whether or not there are any criteria you must satisfy to trade the extra hours. On some premises licences there are conditions requiring you to give either the Police or Licensing department prior notice to the event.
If your premises licence does not permit you to do what you want to do on these dates or the conditions would restrict you from operating as you wish, then you can lodge a temporary event notice. Alternatively, if you are looking to trade later on certain days every year, you can apply to vary your premises licence permanently.
There are time-scales and restrictions involved with all of these options and prior to proceeding you should seek legal advice or speak with your Licensing Authority.
