Portman Group rulings on high strength beer

high strength beer

The Independent Complaints Panel of the Portman Group has observed that 500ml cans of super strength beers containing more than four units of alcohol breach alcohol responsibility rules.

Following complaints from the homelessness charity, Thames Reach, the panel observed that 500ml cans of Carlsberg Special Brew and Skol Super contained more than the mens recommended lower risk daily guidelines. They also noted that the quality of the product would degrade quickly once the can was opened and that it would be reasonable to expect that the beer would be consumed by one person in one session. The Portman Group went on to issue a retailer alert bulletin for products in cans which exceeded 4 units of alcohol, instructing supermarkets, Off Licences, convenience stores and other retailers not to place orders for the 500ml cans after 31 March 2015.

It seems to be acknowledged that having decided that such products were acceptable in 2008, the change in approach comes as a result of various voluntary schemes to reduce the availability of high strength beer and cider in certain town centres.
