Temporary event notices for the festive period

The Christmas and New Year break is approaching yet again.

Check that your licence to make sure that you are covered to do what you want to do.

Most licences should contain an extension for all licensable activities on New Year’s Eve so that you can trade right through to the commencement of normal activities on New Year’s Day, however, not all do and it is worth checking.

If you have the authority on your licence, then you should check your licence conditions to see whether or not there are other conditions you must satisfy in order to trade the extra hours.

If you do not have a special permission on your licence or if you want to extend your hours beyond those within your licence, prepare now and remember that you will have to apply for a temporary event notice.

You can apply for a late temporary event notice on five clear working days’ notice, but if the Police or Environmental Health Officers object, the late temporary event notice will automatically be refused.

If you think your temporary event notice is going to be controversial then you should lodge a standard temporary event notice giving ten clear working days’ notice with the licensing department, police and environmental health department.

A temporary event notice can last up to 168 hours and premises can benefit from 15 temporary event notices per year, for up to 21 days per year.

It is crucial that in your calculations, you take into account the holidays and bank holidays over the Christmas period.

The last dates for submitting temporary event notices for Christmas and New Year this year are:
