The use of polycarbonates: When to draw the line

The problem with the polycarbonates

Polycarbonates: The pub had been closed for a while and has recently reopened and been doing very well. Cask Ale has proved to be particularly popular. Unfortunately, on New Year’s Eve, there is a “glassing” incident. The Police threaten to take the premises for review unless we agree to polycarbonate glasses throughout. We are opposed to this for the following reasons.

The Solution

  • It was a one-off
  • It will destroy the Cask Ale theme
  • Not all glasses are available in polycarbonate.

Nevertheless, we are anxious to avoid a review if possible.

Our approach is to make it quite clear to the Police immediately that we would not entertain polycarbonates. The Police seemed confused themselves about what sort of glasses could be made available in polycarbonate.

The matter was ultimately resolved on the basis that we agreed to sell pints and half pints only from a strengthened glass.
