As expected, London Borough of Hackney’s full Council approved a consultation to introduce a Late Night Levy in their Borough.
The consultation will take place between September and December 2016 and seek opinion on whether the Levy should apply to premises authorised to sell alcohol between midnight and 06:00. There are a number of possible exemptions in relation to premises with overnight accommodation, theatres and bingo halls and there is also the possibility there will be a reduction of 30% for premises in receipt of small business rate relief. Currently there is no proposed exemption for premises trading on New Year’s Eve after midnight.
Should a Levy be introduced it is unlikely to come into effect until June 2017.
