Most employers would probably answer the question “are you paying your employees enough?” with a firm “yes!!”. However, the inescapable truth is that employer are obliged to pay the national minimum wage and some employer do find that they have inadvertently paid their employees too little. This can be particularly problematic where employees have unusual working practices (such as certain employees who are required to be “on-call” at certain times whilst living at the employer’s premises).
The national minimum wage rules can also be complicated with different rates of pay applying to different employees (for example due to thier age).
ACAS have come to the aid of employers who find themselves confused by the national minimum wage with the development of a national minimum wage calculator. If you would like to visit the ACAS national minimum wage calculator please click here (the calculator can be found approximately half way down the page). ACAS is an independent body charged with promoting good employment relations between employers and employees.
