Notarial work can feel time-sensitive, especially where documents are needed for a visa, overseas property transaction, international study place, business arrangement or legal process in another country. Hugh Thompson, Notary Public, will explain what is required in plain English, check the relevant documents carefully and guide you through any further steps, such as legalisation or obtaining an apostille where needed.

Hugh Thompson is a notary public. He works from our Leeds and York offices and is highly experienced in academic documents, powers of attorney and other specialist legal documents. Hugh offers a full range of notarial services for individuals, companies, charities and institutions. His role is to authenticate documents and facts for use outside of England and Wales.
Notary public
Hugh Thompson, Notary Public, is regulated by the Master of the Faculties through the faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Whilst Hugh is a Partner of Flint Bishop Limited based in our Leeds and York offices, his notarial practice is separate to the legal services provided by Flint Bishop Limited. Freedom to instruct: You are free to instruct a notary public of your choice. Hugh will listen to your requirements and provide you with a quote or estimate and timescale for the work so you can decide whether you wish to instruct him. Notarial services are subject to notarial Terms of Business.
Clear pricing: Once you set out your requirements, Hugh will provide you with clear pricing information. If the work is straightforward, he will provide a fixed fee quote, which starts from £85.00 plus VAT and disbursements. If your requirements are more complicated, Hugh will provide you with an estimate based on an hourly rate plus disbursements and VAT. His Terms of Business set out the notarial charges and expenses in more detail.
Services provided: Hugh will provide an outline of the notarial service to be provided setting out any key stages and the timescale for each stage. Although each notarial matter is different, you can read about the typical stages of a notarial transaction in the Terms of Business.
Timescales: Hugh aims to see clients within [two] weeks of being provided with instructions and documentation wherever possible. Notarisation can take place during the meeting where possible – for one document you should allow 40 minutes for the meeting, for two to four documents you should allow up to an hour. Notarisation may be undertaken following the meeting for more complicated matters and Hugh will advise you on the applicable timescale. Insurance: Hugh has professional indemnity insurance cover which is at least the minimum level of cover specified by the Master of the Faculties (£1 million).
Complaints: Hugh Thompson, Notary Public, aims to provide all clients with a high standard of service. However, in the unlikely event you wish to complain about your notarial matter, please follow the complaints procedure set out the Terms of Business.
