Richard Burton joined our Dispute Resolution team as a Senior Associate in June 2023.

Since qualifying as a solicitor in 2012, Richard has demonstrated exceptional skills and expertise throughout his career, particularly in navigating intricate legal disputes. He has a wealth of experience in handling complex and high-value commercial litigation cases.

Richard understands the pressures faced within our clients’ sectors and specialises in assisting them to find pragmatic and cost-efficient solutions to novel and complicated problems.

Throughout his career, Richard has amassed a wealth of experience in advising and representing local authorities, registered housing providers, companies, and charities.

His practice encompasses a broad range of issues, including commercial contract disputes, agency issues, public law matters, and Equality Act issues.

Richard’s notable work highlights include:

  • Acting for a council on a breach of PFI contract worth c.£18m, resulting in a negotiated settlement worth £3.5m and several agreed variations to the contract.
  • Acting for a social housing provider in a breach of indemnity/warranty claim worth £4.2m, successfully reaching a settlement at mediation for £3.9m.
  • Defending a claim by a managing agent for £1.4m on behalf of a social housing provider, securing a strike out and order for security for costs, and ultimately negotiating a settlement of £600,000.
  • Handling a judicial review for a council, followed by a professional negligence claim against the former solicitor, whose advice resulted in the judicial review.

Richard also worked as an in-house solicitor for a local authority for seven years, where gained an in-depth knowledge of local government and housing sector clients.
